Dock relocation and transfers
Floating docks can be moved, but on Grand Lake a move is a permitted activity. Here's how relocation and dock sales usually work.
Owners move docks for all sorts of reasons: the cove has silted in, a bigger boat needs deeper water, a neighbor's dock changed the picture, or a dock bought used needs to come to a new lot. Floating docks can be unhooked, towed and reset, but the new location has to meet the same rules as a new dock.
Does moving a dock need a permit?
Yes. GRDA's lake rules list relocating a dock among the activities that need a completed application and GRDA's written permission before work starts, and GRDA inspects the dock after relocation. The new spot has to satisfy the one-third cove rule, the 5-foot property-line clearance and GRDA's anchoring rules. Some docks need a directional bearing; GRDA has a separate application for those.
What does a relocation involve?
- Checking water depth, cove width and access at the new location.
- Surveying and preparing drawings for GRDA.
- Disconnecting power and removing anchors at the old site.
- Towing the dock, then resetting anchors and the walkway at the new site.
- Reconnecting power through an Oklahoma licensed electrical contractor, who provides the certificate GRDA requires for relocated docks.
Selling a lake home with a dock
A dock permit doesn't simply follow the house. GRDA handles a sale through a transfer application, and its permit forms page also lists a Notification of Private Dock Sale. GRDA's application asks whether the prior owner held a raw water permit or a license to encroach, and a transferred dock needs a fresh electrical certificate. Sellers who line this up early tend to have fewer surprises at closing.
Things a dock can't be used for
GRDA's application says permit holders may sell full ownership of a dock but may not lease, rent or sublet it for commercial activity, and its lake rules prohibit habitable structures on docks.
We don't put prices on this site. The dock contractor you're connected with prices the job after seeing your shoreline, water depth and access, and anything said over the phone is only a rough starting point.

Common questions
Can I move my dock to a different spot on my own lot?
Usually, if the new spot meets GRDA's rules, but relocation needs GRDA's written permission first and an inspection afterward.
What happens to the dock permit when I sell?
GRDA uses a transfer application and moves the permit number to the buyer. A new electrical certificate is required for transferred docks.
