New floating docks on Grand Lake
Most new private docks on Grand Lake float. Here's what shapes the design before the first frame is welded.
A floating dock rides on sealed floats and moves up and down with the lake. On Grand Lake that matters because the water level doesn't sit still: seasonal targets and floodwater releases from Pensacola Dam both move it. The right layout depends on how deep the water is off your lot, how wide your cove is, how much wind and wake it takes, and what you plan to keep in the slips.
How far out can the dock go?
GRDA's one-third cove rule sets the outer limit. Its private dock application says no dock may extend more than one third of the cove, measured from where the walkway meets the 745-foot Pensacola Datum line across to the nearest opposite shoreline at the same elevation. A dock also can't reach farther than needed for suitable water depth. GRDA may ask for a survey that shows the dock against the one-third contour.
What goes into a Grand Lake dock design?
- Slips: sized to your boat's length and beam, with room for PWCs. GRDA caps a residential dock at ten watercraft.
- Flotation: marine-grade floats that won't waterlog, crack or shed beads, or snap-together polyethylene sections.
- Frame: steel, aluminum or wood, matched to the dock's size, roof and expected loads.
- Anchoring: on GRDA property, a sleeve near-ground anchor or a saddled anchor. Trees on GRDA land can't be used.
- Lighting: white or amber lights on the outermost corners, on from sunset to sunrise.
- Side clearance: at least 5 feet between the dock edge and your property line.
What paperwork comes first?
You apply to GRDA with scaled, fully dimensioned drawings, written directions to the site by land and by water, your deed, and a stamped survey by an Oklahoma licensed land surveyor showing the taking line, with corners marked on the ground. If the dock will have power, the electrical certificate goes in too. Installation waits for GRDA's approval letter. See the Grand Lake dock permit guide for the full checklist.
What affects the price?
- Number and size of slips, and whether there's a roof
- Frame, flotation and decking materials
- Lifts, lighting and electrical work
- Water depth, cove exposure and site access
We don't put prices on this site. The dock contractor you're connected with prices the job after seeing your shoreline, water depth and access, and anything said over the phone is only a rough starting point.

Common questions
Can I build a dock without a survey?
GRDA's private dock checklist calls for an original, stamped survey by an Oklahoma licensed land surveyor showing your property line and GRDA's taking line. Plan on getting one.
How many boats can a private dock hold?
GRDA's application says a residential dock may accommodate ten or fewer watercraft.
